Keep germs at bay with these all-natural hand sanitizers

Hand sanitizer is fast becoming the product of the year. Washing your hands with soap and water is the ideal way to get rid of germs (see our guide to the best natural handwashes in the June 2020 issue), but when you're on the go, a spritz or rub of hand sanitizer is the next best thing.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a hand sanitizer should contain at least 60 percent alcohol for it to be effective, so we've picked out five products that fit the bill, but all made with natural ingredients and without the usual nasties.

Hopefully you can get hold of one of these before they fly off the shelves.

Lavender love

Dr Bronner's

Organic Hand Hygiene Spray, $4.99/£5.25 (2 fl oz/59 mL)

US; tel: 844-937-2551

UK; tel: 0203 823 6629

Made up of just four ingredients—ethyl alcohol (62 percent), water, lavender oil and glycerin—this simple formula is certified organic, fair trade and vegan. Simply spritz onto hands to quickly kill germs or spray into the air to enjoy the relaxing lavender scent.

Essentially clean

Neal's Yard

Organic Defence Hand Spray, $10.50/£6.50 (1.69 fl oz/50 mL)

US; tel: 888-697-0909

Claimed to kill 99.9 percent of bacteria, this beautifully fragranced hand spray from Neal's Yard contains 70 percent alcohol, purifying witch hazel water and a blend of essential oils including antibacterial thyme and lemongrass. It's certified organic and vegan-approved and leaves hands feeling fresh with no sticky residue.

Herbal helper

Stay Safe Herbal Hand Sanitiser, £9

Formulated using an herbal tincture base of sage, rosemary, thyme and neem, this vegan and organic spray is designed to fight bacteria and other pathogens gently yet effectively. Tea tree oil, which has antiviral and antibacterial properties, is also included, and the alcohol content is 65 percent—just above the recommended amount.

Spray and soothe

100% Pure

As well as 62 percent ethyl alcohol, this hand sanitizer includes soothing aloe vera juice to leave skin feeling soft and moisturized, and antibacterial tea tree oil to keep bugs at bay. It dries quickly, is non-sticky and is certified vegan and cruelty-free.

Minty fresh
